Description

Very good condition, size 32 x 25 cm. The photographs did not record the battle that took place in 1866, but there were many artists, so the motif of the Battle of Vis was often published as a motif of postcards, prints, paintings, or "photographs" on cardboard.

The naval battle at Vis took place on July 20 , 1866 in the Adriatic Sea, near the island of Vis (in the Vis Channel). In it, the navies of the Austrian Empire and the Kingdom of Italy clashed.

The battle ended with the victory of the Austrian Navy, and was part of the Austro-Prussian War. In this war, the Kingdom of Italy was an ally of Prussia. Italy's interest was the capture of former Venetian estates on the eastern Adriatic coast, which were conquered by the Peace of Campo Formi in 1797 to the Habsburg Monarchy.

This was the first major naval battle involving armored and steam-powered ships. It is also the first battle in world history in which two armored fleets clashed on the high seas.Equally, it was one of the last, if not the last, battles, that used beak-piercing a ship as a war tactic, a technique that was used as far back as the Illyrian era, in the early old days.

The Austrian fleet was led by Wilhelm von Tegetthoff, while the commander of the Italian fleet was Count Carlo di Persano.

Since numerous Croatian sailors participated on the Austrian side (out of 7,871 sailors there were about 5,000 Croats), an important consequence of the Austrian victory under Vis was the rejection of affection for Italy and the awakening of Croatian national consciousness in Dalmatia.
